This is the second blog that I have written
and I'm not sure if I suck at this or what…You
can respond to these via email if you like and
ask us just about anything …So like I
said last week…I will clue you all into
the making of Sonic X "THIRTEEN"……Here
we go……
When we first started writing this record a
lot of ideas were being thrown around. I have
to say the first one that really started to
shape the record in a loose way, would have
to be "Alive"…up until that
song idea was explored, we were really just
fishing around for new ideas…We hadn’t
really found anything (songs) that really excited
us...One day I was fooling around with a riff
that later turned into "Alive"…I
wrote that song in my living room on my acoustic
and I remember it was one of the coldest days
of winter in 2005…The first line of the
song just hit me while I was playing the riff…"Cut
my mind into pieces"…One of the things
that stood out about that song was the guitar
riff…It was the first riff I had ever
written for Sonic X, and I was sure Lawrence
was gonna shoot it down. Truthfully I didn’t
think the guys would even like the song…It
was kind of different from anything else we
had written before…I almost didn’t
submit the song but, I thought what the hell.
I recorded it acoustically which made it very
bluesy sounding…turned out the guys really
liked it. Lawrence took my riff and gave it
the "Sonic X" treatment…So we
demoed it, and really liked it…Or so I
thought…When we went to record the album
and we were done recording that song…Lawrence
and I looked at each other and said the same
thing…"It needs a better chorus"…Now
keep in mind the music for the song had already
been recorded…So now the pressure was
on to fit a better vocal chorus on the same
piece of music…This can sometimes be worse,
than if we started from scratch with new music…Well
after about a half a bottle of Crown Royal,
and a pizza…Lawrence and I wrote the chorus
you now here and know as "Alive"…It
was originally called…”Cut my mind"…"Alive
is really the song that got the ball rolling
as far as the writing was concerned…After
we wrote it the flood gates opened for all of
us…The song is about redemption…From
emotional desolation…WOOO HOOOO….deep
thinking!!!!!!! I can do that!!!!! And I'm house
broken too……
